NEWBORN SESSION FAQS

How far in advance should I book my session?

It is always a good idea to book while still pregnant. My calendar generally fills up 3-4 months in advance. However, I am often able to make room for last minute bookings, so please don’t hesitate to ask my availability. Sometimes life happens, time gets away from us while we are pregnant, and we don’t get around to scheduling photos. I completely understand that, and I will try my best to fit you in so you don’t miss the once in a lifetime opportunity of newborn photos for your baby.

When do newborn sessions take place?

Newborn sessions generally take place between 6-18 days. When you book, I put your due date on my calendar, and then I ask that you notify me as soon as possible once your baby is born. We will then work together to find a time that is convenient for you, often on a weekend morning.

Please keep in mind that while 6-18 days is the ideal timeframe, I would never turn away a parent simply because their newborn is older. I believe every parent deserves beautiful photographs of their baby, regardless of age. While the session can look a little different for an older newborn than for a 6-day-old, I have successfully photographed several newborns even up to 7 weeks old.

Where will the session be?

The session will take place either in your home or at a shared studio space. (Studio must be available)

What if my baby is fussy?

I know not all babies are 100% settled and on their best behavior exactly when you want them to be. I set aside hours for your session, so do not worry about this one bit. Your newest family member will be exactly as they are supposed to be that day, and I look forward to capturing your little one exactly as they are in that moment.

Yes, your baby might get fussy. Your baby will get hungry. Fussy is a natural response, and I welcome it, as it allows me the opportunity to capture you being the loving mother or father that you are to your baby. Some of my favorite images are parents showering their babies with love and comfort during these times.

How long will the session last?

While most newborn sessions last around 2-3 hours, I ask clients to set aside 4 hours for their newborn session. Some babies need to eat and be soothed more than others, and I will never rush your baby or the experience. If we need to go beyond 2-2.5 hours to create a beautiful gallery of images for you, I am happy to do so.

Are parents and siblings included?

Always! My goal as a photographer is to tell your story, and that story is about all of you, your growing family, the indescribable love you feel as parents, and the adoration of older siblings. This is the beginning of a special relationship between all of you and your newest family member, and it is so important to capture it. I encourage clients to not try to *be* any certain way, but to simply let themselves feel all the emotions that come with holding their baby. This includes the joy, the intense love, and the beauty of having brought a new baby into the world. This is the story you’ll want to remember and share with your baby one day. Think of how amazing your baby will feel to be able to visualize just how loved they were from the very beginning of their existence.

How should I prepare for the session?

Several days before your session, I will send you some instructions. It will include guidance on keeping your house warm, keeping your baby’s belly full, and more. Beyond that, I ask that you try your best to relax and not worry about a thing. I’ll take care of the details so that there is no stress on you.

What should we wear?

Your baby doesn’t need clothes. I will use simple wraps for your baby to help curl them into those sweet newborn positions, and to help keep them feeling secure. As for parents and siblings, I recommend neutral colors. Maxi dresses often work well for new mamas. Leggings and a flowy shirt are another option. I am always happy to help you brainstorm ideas if you get stuck. I am also happy to recommend a clothing consultant for your session.

Can you tell me about your style?

My style is simple, natural, and emotive. My goal is to capture your baby in a way that is unique to them, including their sweet facial expressions and movements. I use neutrals, including some muted pinks for the girls, and my setups are simple. All of this allows your baby to remain the focus. I’ll capture those tiny details that change so fast, as well as photos of you connecting with your baby, documenting the love that shines so clearly on your face. I truly believe these are the photos that will mean the most to you years down the road, as you reminisce on this special, but fleeting time in your life.

What products do you recommend for newborn sessions?

I highly recommend albums to all of my clients. They are such a great way to preserve the memories of your baby. While digital files certainly have their place, technology is not perfect, and it changes fast. An album sits beautifully on a shelf or coffee table, and is the best way for clients to enjoy their photos over and over again as the years pass.

I offer 3 tiers of albums to accommodate different budgets. By ordering your album through me, I will take care of the design work and the ordering, so you don’t need to worry about a thing. You will receive a draft album design from me, in a system that allows you to easily note any changes you’d like to be made. Once you’ve approved the design, you are done!

Prints and wall art are also a great way to showcase your photos. I am happy to help you with this process as well. Scheduling this 1-1.5 hour consultation is a great way to get everything decided and ordered. I have had clients tell me at their newborn session their wedding photos never made it to their walls, so they are grateful for this dedicated time to focus on making sure their newborn photos don’t repeat that history.

Please keep in mind that while I do sell digital copies of the photos, digital files are not archival, nor are they the best way to preserve your images over time. Flash drives and hard drives go corrupt. Technology changes. That said, printed copies of photos can always be scanned at a later date. While I completely understand clients wanting digital copies – I want that for you too! I highly encourage all clients to print their photos, as well as store their files in multiple places.

How soon will I have my photos?

You will receive an online gallery of images within 3 weeks. You are able to download any photos you’d like right away, so you can get those birth announcements ordered. I do ask clients to give 4-6 weeks for turnaround of products.

Can I share my photos on social media?

Yes! In fact, I highly encourage you to post your photos on FB, instagram, and you’re free to use them however you want. We do not advertise, so we rely heavily on word of mouth to get new clients. You’ll be doing a huge favor to me if you post your photos on social media and tag me. Please don’t forget to link to us so your friends can find me!
